This page explains the checklist for foreign residents with a residence card: moving, extending your period of stay, the My Number card and leaving Japan.
Tick every situation that applies to you.
Add your moving date or the end of your period of stay to see deadlines.
Untick “I have a My Number card” if you do not have one.
Print the list and tick the boxes as you go.
What the steps mean
Address: give the notice within 14 days of moving, with your residence card. The city office updates the card, so there is no separate trip to immigration.
Moving to another city: give a moving-out notice first. Hand in your My Number card with the moving-in notice.
Extending your stay: with a stay of 6 months or more, you can apply from 3 months before it ends. If no decision comes by the end date, you may stay until the decision or 2 months after the end date.
Trips abroad: telling the officer you will return covers you for 1 year, or until your period of stay ends.
Leaving for good: your residence card and My Number card stop being valid. Settle residence tax first.
Deadlines count from the day after the event, so “14 days from moving on April 1” means by April 15 (Civil Code Art. 140).

Frequently asked questions
How many days do I have to change my address in Japan?
14 days from the day you move. Give the moving-in or change-of-address notice at the city or ward office with your residence card. That also counts as the residence card address notice.
When can I apply to renew my visa in Japan?
If your period of stay is 6 months or longer, from 3 months before it ends, according to the Immigration Services Agency. Apply before the end date.
What happens to my My Number card when I renew my visa?
For most foreign residents, the card is valid only until the end of the period of stay. After the extension, ask your city office to extend the card.
